OAS assembly ends with another loud call for Haiti

The 53rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) was attended by the United States and Canada and 22 Latin American and Caribbean states. Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez chaired the assembly.

The General Assembly of the Organization of American States concluded on 23 June 2023 in Washington, D.C., USA with a resolution that again calls for support to Haiti.

The position of the Dominican government has always been one of non-intervention in Haiti by the Dominican Republic but of one calling for international community support to the resolving of the multidimensional crisis in the western third of the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic is the country most impacted by the collapse of social services and employment in Haiti.

Alvarez said the resolution entitled “For the immediate restoration of security, the strengthening of humanitarian aid and support for the protection of human rights and democracy in Haiti” is a way to speak out loud for Haiti.

“It is to amplify, to amplify, to magnify the voice of the international community, requesting the aid, the assistance, the help of Haiti in all the matters that it says there. The OAS does not have the solutions to for the use of coercive forces,” explained the diplomat to Diario Libre.

He reminded that there is only one body with the power to forcibly intervene, and this is the Security Council of the United Nations. He said the recent OAS resolution is a call to the international community.

Likewise, the members attending the Assembly expressed solidarity with Ukraine and called on Russia to withdraw immediately its military forces and equipment from Ukraine and return to a path of dialogue and diplomacy.
