The death toll of the Friday, 23 June 2023 La Vega bus accident has reached six. The terrible scene in the middle of the Duarte Highway near La Vega (Km 129) was almost surreal.
Immediate reports noted four fatalities, but as of Saturday, the death toll had climbed to six. There were at least 26 persons injured and there are several still in the Juan Bosch Trauma Hospital on the Duarte Highway.
According to the bus driver and other witnesses, the bus was running in the “fast” lane when it was cut off by a black Jeep Cherokee, and the violent maneuver used by the driver to avoid a crash, resulted in the Transporte Espinal bus going into the median, the area between opposing lanes of traffic, and flipping on its side. The intercepting driver has not said present.
This is the most serious accident on the Duarte Highway in recent years. Witness comments noted that the driver was forced to take very sudden action just before the accident.
At least 30 injured are reported, many with serious injuries.
