Attorney General Miriam German Brito recently valued the inter-institutional alliance to fight against illicit trade, which puts citizens’ health and life at risk, she stressed.
While presiding over the first national meeting of prosecutors liaisons for the fight against illicit commerce, German Brito highlighted the actions undertaken, as well as the strategic alliance established with the Inter-institutional Public-Private Council for the Prevention of Illicit Commerce to face illicit commerce crime.
“Illicit trade is a complex crime, where many typical behaviors underlie, which go beyond the sale of adulterated products, thus comprising the formation of criminal structures that violate our customs, the resulting tax evasion affects national finances and affects our national security with the improper transfer of sensitive materials across our borders,” said German Brito.
The meeting was held in the auditorium of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD). Prosecutors from different jurisdictions in the country attended.
Germán Brito pointed out that illicit trade “is an ideal vehicle for money laundering and illicit enrichment.” She said it also affects local commerce and economic development, but most especially, she said these crimes put the health and lives of citizens at risk.
She said that confronting this practice is not an individual task but the work of the country as a whole.
“We must be able to cover all the flanks where these crimes attack us and that is the strength of Eradication of Illicit Commerce Law 17-19, which provides us with a space where we all have a specific component of responsibility and where the role of one must be recognized and respected by the other, from collaboration and teamwork,” said German Brito.
