DR holds presidency of the World Tourism Organization’s Regional Commission for the Americas

During the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s 68th Regional Commission for the Americas meeting in Quito, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic received a unanimous vote to serve as president of the Regional Commission for the Americas for 2023-2025. Argentina and Paraguay will serve as vice presidents for the same period.

The meeting highlighted the advances and recovery of the Americas. The statistics indicate that several regional destinations are above pre-pandemic levels in terms of international arrivals. These are: Saint Maarten (+51%), El Salvador (+26%), Colombia (+18%), the US Virgin Islands and the United States (+17%), Guatemala (+14%), Honduras (+13%) and the Dominican Republic (+11%).

The UNWTO says that the strong demand from the United States outbound market is the key driving the recovery of the tourism industry.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations says that the Dominican Republic has won all the candidacies it has presented for positions within the UNWTO agency in the last two years. The DR now sits on the Executive Council.

The Regional Commission for the Americas designs and participates in UNWTO policies for the Western Hemisphere. It meets every year but constantly communicates with the organization’s headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

“Being chosen unanimously ratifies the country’s position as a reference in the region and strengthens the leadership achieved in recent years. The Dominican Republic intends to continue the dynamization of UNWTO activities in the region, emphasizing sustainable and inclusive tourism policies in line with the 20-30 Agenda,” states a note from the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Carlos Peguero, and the Permanent Representative Ambassador to the UNWTO, Aníbal de Castro represented the Dominican Republic in the Quito meeting.
