Chamber of Deputies approves paternity leave for 10 days; bill has yet to pass in the Senate

The Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that would authorize 10 days of paternity leave to fathers. The bill has yet to pass in the Senate. The bill merges proposals presented by Jhonny Medina (PRM Puerto Plata) and of Jose Horacio Rodriguez (Opción Democrática). Rodríguez had proposed a 15-day leave.

The bill amends Art. 54 of the Labor Code that establishes a five-day leave of absence for fathers. The bill says the employee needs to give the employer a 30-day notice prior to the birth of the child. The leave of absence also applies to adoption. The cost of the leave of absence is levied on the Superintendence of Health and Labor Risks, and thus will be covered with taxpayer funds not company funds.
