Ambassador Chen Luning of the People’s Republic of China met last week with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District), to lobby for opening official talks for a free trade agreement with the Dominican Republic.
He said Chinese investors wish to invest in the Dominican Republic, especially in the export free zones, as reported in Hoy.
Luning said the agreement would boost bilateral trade. He explained China already has trade agreements with Chile, Peru, Costa Rica and Ecuador. A trade agreement is in negotiation with Nicaragua.
“Congress has a great responsibility in the approval of the agreement. The government will take the initiative, but it has to be approved by Congress,” he said. He pointed out that the legal security here guarantees a good investment climate.
Pacheco promised to discuss the matter with President Luis Abinader. He recalled that China had sent Covid-19 vaccines when the contracts signed with Astra Zeneca and Pfizer were not delivering. He said these shipments of vaccinations (Synovac) enabled the Dominican Republic to become one of the first countries to overcome the pandemic.
