
While the ban on sale of parrot fish is in place for two years, restaurants will sell the fish arguing these were stocks they had in the freezers from before the ban. It is much up to the consumer to pass on consuming parrot fish to save the coral reefs.
Parrot fish are important for coral reef health. These are the fish that removes sand from the coral reefs and with their work help keep coral reefs healthy.
Fishermen want the government to remove the ban on fishing the parrot fish. They do not understand that parrotfish spend 90% of their day cleaning the reef of algae, as Nature Conservancy highlights. “This cleaning (eating) helps corals grow and thrive, and healthy reefs support more fish in the sea,” stresses the conservation group.
