Relief on the way for Metro commuters

Very long lines are usual for those that use the Santo Domingo Metro. The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) announced on Wednesday, 11 July 2023 the arrival of the first six of 72 rail cars. The cars are needed to increase the capacity of the Metro-Teleferico Integrated Transportation System in Greater Santo Domingo.

OPRET reports that this first delivery of some 24 train units, of three cars each, which can be coupled together. The number of new subway cars on order is sufficient to double the transport capacity.

OPRET says another 45 to 60 days will be needed for the six cars to get on the tracks increasing capacity of Line 1 that runs east west. The management of the Santo Domingo metro system says that six cars per month are expected, until completing the 72 car total order.
