The Fuerza del Pueblo (People’s Force) registered the candidacy of its leader, former President Leonel Fernandez. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has opened the general election campaign for the registration of pre-candidates to presidential, congressional and municipal elections in 2024.
Fernandez was President of the Republic from 1996-2000, and then from 2004-2008, and 2008-2012. The 2015 constitution was changed to incorporate a provision allowing Fernandez to run again. He sought to be the then ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate in 2020, but in a convoluted electronic primary, Fernandez would loose the candidacy to then minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo, the preferred candidate of then President Danilo Medina. Fernandez, who at the time was the president of the PLD, would leave the party and found the Fuerza del Pueblo and run for President in 2020 losing to Luis Abinader of the PRM.
