Haitian woman tested positive for cholera in Barahona; was a recent entry from Haiti

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported that of eleven Haitian patients in the public hospitals in Enriquillo and Barahona city in Barahona, only one tested positive for cholera. The person testing positive was described as a woman, 25-year old Pelty Reneta who had just recently entered from Haiti. She was hospitalized on 10 July 2023 and was treated at the hospital.

The other patients were discharged and are stable, continuing the treatment for their diarrhea, because they also presented other pathogens, such as Shiguella, Salmonella, Ascaris Lumbricoides and Estamoeda, obtained in the official laboratory results.

After the epidemiological surveillance carried out in combination with the Provincial Health Agency of Barahona and the Risk Management Agency of the MSP, no other suspected diarrhea patients have been reported as of the weekend.

Likewise, the Ministry of Public Health notifies that so far it has no evidence or reports of deaths from officially reported cases of cholera. Nevertheless, Listin Diario reports that there is an under registry of cases of undocumented Haitians that have died from cholera in the Dominican Republic in the border province of Barahona.
