Instead of adhering to its own rules and norms, the city government of Mayor Carolina Mejía called for the postponement of the hearing before the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) that sought to paralyze the construction of a motel on the Malecon. The construction is going fast as the city government delays revoking an irregular permit its Urban Planning Department granted the motel owners for the construction. The city government has recognized the permit is irregular but has not administratively ordered the construction to stop. The community is requesting the TSA order the city government to revoke the permit.
Mayor Carolina Mejia has been the first in over 30 years to allow the construction of a motel outside the Km 11 limit. Three resolutions issued by the capital city government prohibit the construction of the motel. For decades, the mayors adhered to the order. Not so, the government of Carolina Mejia, a politician known to constantly advocate for family rights.
Diario Libre has been covering the irregular construction of the motel that affects the property values and security of several neighborhoods. The motel is under construction on the Malecon, the most iconic avenue in Santo Domingo. Just a kilometer to the west is the Casa de España, one of the leading social clubs in the city of Santo Domingo.
Jose Luis Ravelo, of Almuerzo de Negocios, accused the city mayor Carolina Mejia of complicity with the builders of the motel for not stopping the construction of the motel. Ravelo, who is the communications officer for the Costa Caribe neighborhood group, said that the motel constructors would come to lament the money invested in the construction given that the neighborhood groups would not desist from their efforts to put a stop to the operation of the motel that is adjacent to the park of the neighborhood.
