Susana Gautreau, executive vice-president of the board of directors of the Oil Mining Chamber of the Dominican Republic (Camipe), says the lab at the Institute of Biotechnology and Industry (IIBII) in Santo Domingo has equipment that can carry out toxicological tests to determine the existence and use of fentanyl or other substances in the country.
“We have in our country, a specialized equipment capable of characterizing and identifying fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, this equipment is at the Institute of Biotechnology and Industry (IIBII),” said Gautreau. She added that the equipment cost the government RD$17.5 million.
The lawyer and communicator expressed that this equipment was donated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on 9 June 2020, by means of one of several agreements, within the project “Strengthening of the capacity to ensure food authenticity, security and safety”.
The Dominican government had stated that it was unaware of cases of fentanyl in the Dominican Republic because there was no way to test for it here.
