Haiti is a sanitary threat to the Dominican Republic

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, said on Monday, 17 July 2023 that as long as there are no sanitary controls in Haiti, the Dominican Republic will be under constant threat from cases of cholera, diphtheria, malaria and other diseases coming from the neighboring nation.

Dr. Rivera said that due to the lack of public hospitals in Haiti, the number of Haitian women giving birth in Dominican public hospitals has increased from 15% to 35% in the Dominican Republic.

He said that due to the critical health, political, economic and security situation in Haiti, President Luis Abinader has insisted for international help to improve hygiene, drinking water, vaccination and food security in Haiti.

He indicated that the malaria cases presented in San Juan de la Maguana and Azua have been imported from Haiti, but that they are already under control.

He said the Ministry of Public Health is maintaining the epidemiological fence on the borders of Dajabón, Pedernales, Jimaní and Elías Piña. He indicated that military and Customs personnel have been monitored and vaccinated in these areas.
