The many times lax attitude of Dominican government institutions to proactively enforce laws is leaving doors open for unscrupulous foreign business people to compete with locals, reports El Dinero. The newspaper highlights how Chinese businesses have gained market share in restaurants, motels, supermarkets, general stores and hardware stores. The Chinese are known to operate in the informal businesses and compete with prices and not complying with labor laws.
Some of the other strategies to lower their costs and gain market share include motivating cash payments while discouraging credit card payments, not issuing tax receipts, and not paying social security for workers.
El Dinero reports the government statistics indicate that the number of Chinese nationality foreign workers contributing to the Social Security Treasury (TSS) were but 1,270. The average wage reported was RD$17,585.
Diario Libre reports on 24 July 2023 on the boom in sales of Chinese vehicles and motorcycles.
