Days before the 4 August 2023 deadline, Congress passed the bill to expand anti-doping measures nationwide. The passing of the bill drafted by legislator Orlando Jorge Villegas (PRM-National District) enables the Dominican Republic to comply with the requirements of UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport, of which the country is a signatory since 2012. It may also save the lives of youths who are often lured by their trainers to take steroids and other drugs to enhance their performance. The enactment of the bill is a requirement of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The bill was required to create the National Anti-Doping Agency (Anard).
