Eddy Olivares, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) vice president and executive electoral coordinator, says the ruling party will choose its presidential candidate using the closed primary method on 1 October 2023. The closed primary is a system whereby only persons registered as members of the PRM vote. Expats cannot vote in the primary, only in the general election in May 2024.
Olivares explained that in addition to the presidential candidate, the party will also elect the candidates for Santo Domingo East and Santo Domingo West using the closed primaries method.
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) organizes the primaries and will announce the winners. The JCE will also oversee and supervise the elections through the polls and delegate assembly methods.
Olivares said that all political parties are compelled to present their pre-candidates to the Central Electoral Board by 17 August 2023. He explained that is the deadline for President Luis Abinader to go public with his decision to seek reelection in May 2024.
Olivares says he expects Abinader to announce his decision before 17 August to give time for the party to deliver the list of pre-candidates to the JCE.
Most polls show President Luis Abinader nudging over the 50%+1 requirement to win the Presidency in a first round. The same polls show that Abinader would also win the election if a second round were necessary.
The municipal elections are scheduled for Sunday, 18 February 2024, and the presidential and congressional elections for Friday, 19 May 2024.
