Santo Domingo is hosting experts in seismology and earthquake engineering from 15 countries to discuss a unified Latin American and Caribbean Model Seismic Code. The National Office for Seismic and Vulnerability Assessment of Infrastructure and Buildings is the organizer of the meeting that seeks to forge a strategic alliance to strengthen seismic safety in the region.
The discussions will take place 26-28 July 2023 at the Barcelo Santo Domingo Hotel (former Lina).
“It is a great opportunity for our country and the region to unify the criteria for seismic assessment of buildings and infrastructures under the Seismic Model Code,” said Leonardo Reyes Madera, director of the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie). The Onesvie has the support of other public entities, the academic sector and the construction and seismological sector of the country.
For three days, representatives of 15 countries, including Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic will be discussing this topic with the main objective of sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices in the field of earthquake-resistant construction and standardizing criteria to jointly face challenges and problems of earthquakes and other natural phenomena that affect the region.
The Model Seismic Code will allow for standardizing, improving standards and optimizing access to knowledge and resources for developing seismic research, in the countries involved.
The National Office for Seismic Assessment and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings is in charge of preserving the heritage of public buildings. Its mission is to help mitigate the seismic risk of buildings and infrastructure and protect citizens’ lives through technical and educational procedures.
