
Cassava bread is an important part of Dominican history. The Spanish colonizers relied on the yucca bread to conquer the rest of the Americas.
The National Museum of History and Geography will hold a conference by researcher Gabriel Atiles Bidó on cassava on Thursday, 27 July 2023 at 11am at the Plaza de la Cultura venue. The topic is: “In Defense of Cassava as World and Cultural Heritage in the Caribbean.”
In making the announcement, the director of the National Museum of History and Geography, José G. Guerrero, stressed that cassava is of special importance for the history, geography and culture of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. It is part of the program of talks and panels carried out by the Museum as part of its educational mission.
Recently, the Ministry of Culture submitted to UNESCO the file regarding the candidacy of cassava to be part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The museum is open Tuesdays to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
