Israel Ambassador praises DR; calls for investing in sargassum research

Soon to complete his term in the Dominican Republic, the Ambassador of Israel urged the country to take advantage of sargassum and convert the problem into an opportunity.

The Israeli ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Daniel Biran urges the Dominican Republic to take full advantage of the proliferation of algae on Dominican coasts by transforming this seaweed into value chains for coastal communities and the entire country.

Daniel Biran Boyer highlighted the interest of Israeli companies to make investments that turn a negative into a positive.

“Sargassum is not only a matter for the Dominican Republic, it is a matter for the entire Caribbean. We propose that a recycling solution be found, to try to create green energy,” he said in an interview with Moises Gonzalez of Despertar Nacional, as reported in Noticias SIN. He said there are two or three Israeli companies ready to invest in the country to find the solutions.

“We also work with the Dominican government, with the tourism sector in the Dominican Republic, we work with the Punta Cana Group, we try to do things, but in my opinion, on this issue, we have to unite throughout the Caribbean,” he said. He expects there will surely be solutions or ways to cash in on sargassum.

Biran highlighted the strength of bilateral relations in the two countries, which are not only diplomatic, commercial and cultural but also have a historical character between both peoples.

“I want to tell you, you also have to understand and I am going to repeat it, as a country you have a gift from God. You have to take advantage of everything you have. Israeli companies from the private sector of Israel have the interest to invest more than US$300 million here in the country, in different sectors, this shows that it is a place truly a gift from God,” he said during the interview.

The Israeli ambassador says there will soon be direct flights from Israel to the Dominican Republic, indicating that a Dominican delegation will be visiting Israel in August 2023 to discuss this and other issues. He forecasted an increase in Israeli tourism to the country. “In Israel, it is not a secret that the economic situation is very good and the Israelis have money. I think that one of the countries where they have to spend that money is the Dominican Republic,” he remarked.

The Israeli ambassador also highlighted the impact that the signing of the Water Management Master Plan agreement between the Dominican government and Israel will have for the country.

Biran said: “I feel very good, I feel proud, this agreement really, you have to understand it, there is a lack of water in the world, not only in the Dominican Republic. There were big water problems in Israel that we have already solved and there are big water problems in the world. Water is life, water is health, water is everything, water is a human right. Thanks to President Luis Abinader, thanks to Wellington Arnaud, thanks to the Dominican authorities, really because from the first day here in the country, they are doing everything possible to solve and resolve this water issue, not only saying, but also acting in different places in the country and this says a lot about the success of relations between the two countries,” said the Israeli ambassador to the country.
