Physicians need to be recertified

The Ministry of Superior Education (Mescyt) announced the mandatory medical recertification of physicians in the Dominican Republic. Superior Education Minister Franklin García Fermín said the process seeks to safeguard the quality and safety of medical procedures. TV investigative journalist Nuria Piera has presented cases of persons without the qualifications posing as medical doctors.

The National Council for Medical Recertification (Conarem) undertaking the endeavor “to guarantee the quality of medical services and eradicate the informal practice of medicine at the national level.”

Superior Education Minister Franklin García Fermín, Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera were present for the public announcement.

To be recertified, the practicing physicians need to
complete a number of hours in academic activities, taking an exam or through merits, during long years of professional practice.

The program has the backing of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD).
