The Ministry of Education ordered directors of all public school districts to ensure that all students are registered, regardless of whether or not they have birth certificates. In many cases, the school were not accepting children without birth certificates after sixth grade.
The situation mostly affects would-be Haitian students, but there are also hundreds of thousands of offspring of would-be Dominican nationals without legal documentation.
The Ministry will provide the guidelines for parents to undergo special procedures to provide their children with birth certificates. The situation is serious when a mother does not have a birth certificate because her parent did not have one either.
The schools are also ordered to register those who have failed the grade.
