Women truck drivers want to break the stereotype of men exclusively driving trucks in the Dominican Republic. As reported in Diario Libre, some 43 women were certified to drive heavy trucks and received their accreditations from President Luis Abinader himself on Saturday, 29 July 2023. The women trained in a joint program of the National Institute of Technical Professional Training (Infotep) and the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (Fenatrado). The training included three months of theory and three months of practical instruction.
As reported, the truckers’ association (Fenatrado) and the Abinader administration hope that a new generation of better trained truck and bus drivers will contribute to better road safety in the Dominican Republic.
The certificates allow the women to drive a large bus, a truck or freight truck.
There were 373 men in the truck and bus driving class.
