Good news regarding Duquesa

The Duquesa open-air refuse site has been cited many times on the pages of DR1 News as the government time after time has attempted to manage the humongous dump site.

The Duquesa dump site is located in North Santo Domingo and covers over a million square meters. It is the main garbage landfill for Greater Santo Domingo. Duquesa earned a highly despised fame due to its horrible odors, unsightly mess and constant and very smokey fires. Now the attempts by the Ministry of Environment since Minister Francisco Domínguez Brito, through his predecessors, the late Orlando Jorge Mera and now incumbent Miguel Ceara Hatton to change all of this is most anticipated and appreciated.

Local residents have noted much less foul smells, and smoke as the entire area is covered in sand and dirt as part of the work to create a sanitary landfill.

Section by section of the vast area is going under the new material, and other areas are being managed more efficiently.

As reported in Listin Diario, even the truck drivers that carry waste products to the area are praising the new methods. Nearby residents say that they can work all day without having to stop to recover from the smells and smoke.

The project even includes the reforestation of the area to create a new ecosystem of shade trees and wildlife. However, some problems persist, such as the poor access roads; these are gradually being repaired, according to a report in Listin Diario.
