The public really uses the Metro

The general public is using the Santo Domingo Metro system every day more and more, and it shows in the number of passenger carried so far this year: 52 million. This is more people than were carried in all of 2020, the start year of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the numbers just released by the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET), during the first six months of this year the Metro Lines 1 and 2 carried 25.6 million and 25.4 million passengers respectively, and the city’sn two cablecars carried 1.8 million.

Programs to improve and expand the services of the Metro system have bolstered ridership, and now, the Line 2 often exceeds the number of passengers carried by the original Line 1. In fact, over the lifetime of the two lines, Line 2 has surpassed the total passengers of Line 1 by nearly 500,000 riders, while being in service about three years less.

Given the increase in passengers carried, it appears very possible that 2023 will surpass the 2019 record year of 105 million passengers served.
