UNESCO comes out against use of technology in education

While that lead might sound very negative, the United Nations Organization for Science and Culture (Unesco) has just released an in-depth study on the use of smart phones and computers by students with a focus on the negative impact the electronic tools pose for a solid education.

The 435-page study released late last week in Uruguay has already provoked many serious debates on the issues at hand. The study tells all: “the use of technology in the classrooms and in the home by students could provoke distractions and block learning.”

The document also cites a study carried out in 14 countries where students of all levels were studied. The conclusion was that at the university level there was a major negative once the students go beyond a “moderate usage” of the cellphone. Many of the professors that were interviewed stated that cellphones and tablets were a major distraction in the classroom.
