Public prosecutors cracked down on the IT department (Oficina de Tecnología de la Procuraduría) at the Attorney General in Santo Domingo to arrest a dozen persons charged with erasing thousands of incriminating files for contract killers, drug traffickers, rapists, kidnappers and those accused of gender violence, among other crimes. The operation took place on Tuesday, 1 August in Santo Domingo and is named Hawk Operation (Operación Gavilán). Homes and offices were raided in Greater Santo Domingo, Independencia and San Pedro de Macorís provinces to collect evidence. The investigation had been ongoing for years.
Investigators say that members of the so-called Halcon IV Operation had penetrated the Attorney General. Those accused of being part of the criminal network operating inside the Attorney General Office will be charged for taking bribes to erase the criminal records. Among those accused are prosecutors, administrative employees and active and former police.
The Public Ministry charges that even people who had been sentenced to the maximum of 30 years in jail now appear without a criminal record.
The first arrested in the Hawk Operation were taken to await charges at the Ciudad Nueva jail to await formal charges and pre-trial custody measures.
