Jorge Amado, who is he?

He is the last pre-candidate to register to compete for the National District No. 1 deputy position for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The congressional elections are scheduled for May 2024, but the candidates need to be registered by November 2023.

Jorge Amado Mendez is promoting himself as Jorge Amado. He was not known before, but on 3 August 2023, his campaign managers spent deeply to make the announcement using the expensive advertising front and back pages of Diario Libre, and the Listin Diario.

44-year old Jorge Amado Mendez is the managing partner of the Staff Legal law firm. He is a graduate of the Paris II Pantheon Assas Degree in Comparative Law (2004) and in International Public Law (2003), and from the UNPHU in Santo Domingo (2001).

Before Staff, he worked in foreign investment department and international practice from 1999 to 2004 at the Pellerano & Herrera law firm.

He has the backing of Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District), president of the Chamber of Deputies. Jorge Amado says he will promote family values in Congress and his introductory campaign establishes that he is is in favor of the right to life and openly against gender ideology.

He seeks to compete against highly reputed 35-year old Jose Horacio Rodríguez, who in 2020 won the seat as the most-voted deputy. Rodriguez is running for reelection for the Opción Democrática, a minority party. Rodriguez has recently been active in Congress promoting a bill that would grant 10 days of paternity leave for fathers. He has favored the three exceptions to abortion in the Dominican Republic.
