The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet this August 2023 to deliberate on the proposal of Kenya to lead a multi-nation peace-seeking force in Haiti. The UN representative in the Dominican Republic, Mauricio Ramirez Villegas has gone on the record explaining that the UN has great expectations for sending the peacekeeping force to Haiti.
Ramirez Villegas says it is urgent to reestablish order, security and social stability in Haiti. Ramirez Villegas headed a mission of the UN that traveled to Dajabon from Haiti for private meetings with sectors on the border with Haiti.
So far, Kenya has offered to send 1,000 troops and The Bahamas has offered another 150 men to help stem gang violence in Haiti. The Bahamas has been definitive in not allowing Haitian immigrants and has repeatedly returned boats and migrants to Haiti.
The UN Security Council, presided by the United States, needs to vote on the issue. China and Russia have recently voted against military intervention saying that in the past, this kind of intervention has not achieved results.
Regarding the proposal to send a peacekeeping force to Haiti, Ramirez Villegas explained that the objective this time is to train the Haitian military to have a greater response capacity to combat the gangs.
“It is important that the action taken be careful and effective, without making mistakes as happened in the past,” said Ramirez Villegas, referring to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah).
He guaranteed that the UN will offer the necessary support so that Haiti can reestablish the order, security, political and social stability it needs.
