First numbers from the 2022 National Census

The Dominican Republic has a population of approximately 10,760,028 persons, according to the numbers of the National Census carried out in November 2022 by the National Statistics Office (ONE). With such exact numbers, why the “approximately”? That is because large areas of some urban areas were not counted at all, and many others were poorly surveyed.

However, these are just the first numbers. The National Statistical Office (ONE) issued its first report on the census results on Friday, 11 August 2023. Along with the overall population, there are 50.5% females and 49.5% males, and the top five population areas are Santo Domingo, Santiago, the National District, San Cristobal, and La Altagracia.

According to the 2022 National Census, the country has 4.4 million housing units of all kinds.

The province of Santo Domingo grew by 400,000 inhabitants, or 16.65%. The population increase was most prominent in the province of La Altagracia (basically Punta Cana and environs), with a growth of 63.27% compared to the previous census in 2010.

Espaillat (Moca) and Elias Piña, on the border with Haiti, showed thee lowest population increases. In the case of Moca, only 1,698 more persons were registered in 2022 than in 2010, a growth of 0.73%. In Elias Piña, the numbers were smaller. The population increased from 63,029 in 2010 to 64,615 in 2022.

Other areas with meager growth rates were the provinces of Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís), Barahona, and the mining province of Sánchez Ramírez.

However, the National District also showed a low growth rate, but that could well be attributed to the very high cost of housing in the capital city that has motivated many to move to areas in the nearby provinces of Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal.

The first release of population data by the ONE did not include numbers on mortality and fertility rates nor on the number of disabled persons. According to Miosotis Rivas, director of ONE, data on migration, housing and the family units was left for the next reports to be presented in 2024.
