Drivers with licenses issued in the Dominican Republic will not need to undergo driving tests to get the New York one. The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, President Luis Abinader and New York senator Luis Sepúlveda signed on Sunday, 13 August 2023 the Law S4329A that homologated the issuance of driver’s licenses between New York and the Dominican Republic. President Luis Abinader had traveled to New York to participate in the Dominican Parade on Sunday.
With the signing of this landmark law, Dominican citizens who have a valid driver’s license in the Dominican Republic will be able to obtain a license in New York only by paying the established fee for it, without the need to take the driver’s test. The same will happen with drivers with a New York license in the Dominican Republic.
President Luis Abinader expressed his appreciation for the legislative proceedings and Governor Hochul for her support in the enactment of the bill.
President Luis Abinader gave credit to New York Senator Sepulveda for his contributions to the facility. The intention is to extend the driver’s license reciprocity facility to other countries.
Law S4329A was sponsored by Senator Luis Sepulveda, assemblymen Phil Ramos and Manny De Los Santos and is described as a crucial advance in the recognition and exchange of valid driver’s licenses between jurisdictions.
The law empowers the New York commissioner of motor vehicles to forge agreements to ensure that license holders in the Dominican Republic meet the same rigorous standards and adhere to the same regulations as New York State driver’s license holders.
The NY Senate explained that the act authorizes the commissioner of motor vehicles to enter into reciprocity agreements with other states, countries, provinces or territories that issue driver licenses.
Sepúlveda said that the landmark achievement was possible because of the “invaluable involvement” of collaborators in the Dominican government. He credits Senator Alexis Victoria Yeb (María Trinidad Sanchez -PRM).
Sepúlveda says the signing of the law sows a seed of collaboration that has led the New York State to open up to all countries regarding driver’s license homologation.
With the approval of this law, Dominicans settled in New York will be able to easily and quickly access the benefits of their driver’s licenses, always faithfully complying with the regulations and standards of the State of NY and prioritizing road safety.
