Bachata World Festival set for Puerto Plata

The ADN Bachata World Festival will take place from 16 to 20 November 2023 at venues in Puerto Plata. Tourism Minister David Collado has expressed the Ministry’s support to promoting Dominican bachata abroad. The First World Bachata Festival is held in the Dominican Republic, in the Cibao region where the internationally famous music originated.

The festival will be four days of celebration with concerts, dance workshops, beach and pool activities. The official hotels for the event are the Senator Hotel Resort and Spa and the Playabachata Hotel Resort in Maimón Bay, Puerto Plata, about 20 minutes from Puerto Plata city.

Collado aligns himself with those who for years have been stressing that the country must make its own the universal appeal bachata music has achieved. Collado equated bachata in the Dominican Republic to what the rancheras are for Mexico, jazz to the United States, samba to Brazil and currently, K-pop to Korea.

Juan Llado, the well-known tourism writer and analyst, for years has been calling for the country’s authorities and tourism sector to embrace bachata. Bachata has surpassed the merengue in popularity as a tropical dance abroad. Llado has written extensively that bachata is an excellent tool to attract more tourists and even increase trade and foreign investment.
