Ricardo de los Santos / Senado de la Republica Dominicana

The National Congress gathered on 16 August 2023 and elected the new boards for the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for the 2023-2024 congressional period.

64-year old Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District), a professional politician, was reelected for the 2023-2024 congressional term. Pacheco has been a legislator since 1994.

The other members of the presiding board continue the same. These are: Olfanny Méndez, vice president and Agustín Burgos and Nelsa Shoraya Suárez, secretaries.

The PRM has the majority vote in the Chamber of Deputies.

In the Senate, the PRM has also the majority vote. The senators elected 57-year old Ricardo de los Santos (PRM-Sanchez Ramirez) to replace Eduardo Estrella (Dominicanos por el Cambio-Santiago), who had presided over the Senate during the first two years of the Abinader administration. Estrella’s political party backed President Abinader’s aspirations to President in 2020.

The new president of the Senate is a former president of the infamous Fenatrado trucker’s union that is known for using vandalism to impose its monopoly on land transport in the Dominican Republic. De los Santos’s predecessor at Fenatrado, Blas Peralta, is in prison for murder.

In taking the oath to preside the Senate, De los Santos committed to work with integrity, ethics and transparency.
