President Luis Abinader registered as pre-candidate for the PRM

President Luis Abinader registered on Thursday, 17 August 2023 his pre-candidacy for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) for a second term.

As reported, Abinader did not personally go to the PRM headquarters to formalize the procedure, which was done in his place by the director of Government Ethics, former Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch. As reported, Abinader gave Ortiz Bosch a power of attorney to carry out the registration.

The Dominican Constitution allows Abinader to seek a new term in the 2024 election. It also allows him to sit out this election and then run again in 2028. This would enable him to then seek reelection in 2032. The Dominican Constitution allows only two terms for a President.

Other pre-candidates are mining engineer Ramon Alburquerque and former legal advisor to former President Hipolito Mejia, lawyer Guido Gomez Mazara.

A fourth candidate, Delia Josefina Ortiz was the only woman to register her candidacy. On her Linked In page, she describes herself as a graduate in education, diplomacy and law, as well as a specialist in sex therapy and psychology, with studies in migration and human resources.

The PRM will choose its candidates from a voting list of three million persons on 1 October 2023.

The registrations of the presidential pre-candidates were carried out on the deadline of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) for the registration of pre-candidacies.
