An editorial on Friday, 18 August 2023 in Diario Libre reports on how it is vox populi that the government is not applying the law to Chinese businesses in the Dominican Republic. What everyone can’t figure out is the reason for the leniency on behalf of the government.
The editorial points that government authorities have identified tax evasion, forgeries, and violations of the labor code regarding Chinese businesses. But when it comes to taking action regarding these violations, the only answer the reporters have been getting is that the government has set up a table for discussions on the subject.
The editorial carries the frustration of legitimate Dominican businesses that says they are hard-pressed to compete with the Chinese companies that have been allowed to do business with a more lenient set of regulations. The lack of complying with local rules is said to have enabled the Chinese companies to compete with lower prices.
