President Luis Abinader created the Cabinet to Combat Sargassum, as an advisory council by Decree 379-23 issued on 21 August 2023. The council is responsible for proposing and coordinating the implementation of public policies aimed at reversing the effects of macroalgae on the beaches and coasts of the Dominican Republic.
The participants in the new cabinet are the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Economy, executive vice president of the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism, the commanding general of the Dominican Republic Navy, a representative of the Ministry of the Presidency and a representative of the Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores), representing the private sector.
