Back to school! Classes at all public schools start Monday, 28 August 2023

Many private schools started a week or two ago. But the official opening of the 2023-24 school year is Monday, 28 August 2023. The Ministry of Education said President Luis Abinader will give the symbolic start of classes attending the Germán Martínez Taveras high school in Arroyo Hondo in northern Santo Domingo.

The Ministry of Education says that 2,604,449 students are enrolled in the school year in pre-school, elementary, high school and adult education programs.

There are 532,846 students enrolled in private schools. Students registered in public schools and semi-public schools (private schools receive government funding) are 2,071,603. There are 351,297 students registered in pre-school, 1,174,434 in elementary, 884,485 in high school and 194,233 in adult programs.

Education Minister Angel Hernandez notes that steps have been taken to insure that five of the schools affected by Tropical Storm Franklin in the south get special funding to open soon.

The Minister also announced that textbooks are being distributed and there is a website where the books can be downloaded or read online.
