
The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) announced on Saturday, 26 August 2023 that there were still several dozen persons remaining in state-operated shelters as a result of the passing of Tropical Storm Franklin over the island. According to the agency, some 97% of the hundreds of displaced persons have successfully returned to their homes.
Also in the latest bulletin from the Dominican emergency action unit was the news that nearly 700 dwellings were affected by the flood waters from the storm and three of them were completely destroyed. Two highways were also flooded out, and the Public Works ministry closed them down. The highway to Samana is now fully open to traffic.
In many parts of the South, communities are still cut off from the major access routes due to landslides and flood debris. Water supplies are another issue that is being gradually reestablished and the National Institute of Water (INAPA) says that nearly 80% of the affected water systems are back up and running. Finally, the Santo Domingo Water and Sewage Corporation (CAASD) reported that over 99% of the systems that supply water to the nation’s capital are back to normal.
