USA wins the Norceca Pan Am Final Six, DR is runner-up

The host team, Dominican Republic lost to the United States senior women’s volleyball team 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) in the finals of the Norceca Pan Am Final Six that took place on 26 August 2023. The game was played at the Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Pavillion in Santo Domingo.

Norceca reported that Simone Lee of the United States scored 29 points, her captain Sarah Parsons added 18, while Taylor Mims and Madeleine Gates contributed 14 and 13 points respectively. For the Dominican Republic, Yonkaira Peña stood out with 17 points, followed by Jineiry Martínez and Gaila González with 10 points each.

The Dominican team now travels to Quebec, Canada to participate in the Continental Qualifying Tournament for the Paris 2024 summer Olympic Games. The Continental Qualifier will be played 29 August to 3 September at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

Seven women’s national teams will be competing for six days — the US, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico and host Canada. Teams are divided in two groups. Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico play in Group A. Cuba, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and the United States are in Pool B.

After the first three days of pool-play, pool winners advance into semifinals, second and third places will contest in quarterfinals. The tournament is especially important for the Dominican team that seeks to qualify to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games.
