
The cities are full of billboards and posters of aspiring political pre-candidates. By October 2023, the political parties need to register their official candidates for the 16 February 2024 municipal elections and the 19 May 2024 congressional and presidential elections.
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) says the campaign activities of marches, meetings and billboards for pre-candidates are banned by law. The JCE, nevertheless, has never had the muscle nor the will to impose the law.
Former President Leonel Fernandez argues the politicians have a constitutional right to campaign.
