
President Luis Abinader, who recently announced he will seek reelection in the 19 May 2024 election, is convening leading journalists to a conversation at the Presidential Palace every week. It is a time for the President to announce what his government is working on and address concerns.
The Presidency says the weekly press conferences will take place on Monday at 4:30pm from the Salon Las Cariátides of the Presidential Palace. Homero Figueroa, spokesman for the President, said theListin conference will be available on YouTube.
In the first “La Semanal” meeting held on Monday, 28 August 2023, the President addressed the security on the border with Haiti, saying the DR had installed new technology. He reaffirmed the DR cannot do more than provide humanitarian assistance to Haitian nationals.
He announced new weather radars are to be installed.
He said state prosecutors at the Attorney General Office have received the findings of the firefighter and Ministry of Defense J2 intelligence agency as to what caused the explosions in San Cristóbal that led to 34 dead and around 60 seriously injured on 14 August 2023. He said the Attorney General Office needs to report on the case for the general public. He said the Ministry of Industry & Commerce’s small business department (Promipyme), and the government banks BanReservas and Bandex would assist the affected businesses.
The President said Tropical Storm Franklin had caused around RD$5.1 billion in damages due primarily to flooding. He said agriculture, roads, aqueducts and public electricity wiring were the most affected. He said the Santo Domingo Water Corporation (CAASD) is working on a proposal to improve drainage in the capital city. This would be a 16-year long plan.
