Legislators agree to take time off from the legislature work to tackle their election campaigns

Legislators are being given time off from work in Congress to dedicate to their campaigns for office in 2024. Several legislators seek to be reelected, others seek top jobs in municipalities or other positions in government.

Diario Libre reports that while their work in Congress will decrease, their salaries and other benefits will remain the same.

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District) announced the reduced work sessions. He said that in September 2023, he would be convening the legislative body to meet only on Wednesdays. Pacheco said the work calendar for subsequent months will be announced later. Pacheco seeks to be reelected in the 19 May 2024 general election.

Political parties have until October 2023 to announce their candidacies to elective positions.

Diario Libre reminds its readers that political parties are authorized to choose their candidates through various methods. Those choosing primaries have until the first Sunday in October. Those choosing assemblies, conventions, or surveys have until the last Sunday of October. Thus, September is a month of intense campaigning.
