In a new development on the 14 August 2023 San Cristóbal explosion, public prosecutors arrested the owners of the plastics recycling plant, Vidal Plast. The fire department suspects the blast originated due to inadequately stored chemicals at the plant. N Digital reports that Edward Vidal and, his wife Maribel Sandoval and a daughter were arrested.
The legal defense of the owners disputes the findings of the fire department and argues that only one employee of the company has been identified among the dead. That person was said to have died from smoke inhalation. Nineteen bodies have yet to be identified.
Diario Libre reports that the legal defense for the owners of Vidal Plast say the city government of San Cristóbal and the contractor for the parking that would be built in the area are to blame because they were in charge of the area. The city government had invited to the start of construction of the parking area on 15 August 2023.
