School security has been more and more becoming an issue to tackle. Since July 2023 the Ministry of Education (Minerd) has been purchasing instruments for the school police to use: handcuff, batons, pepper pray, flashlights and whistles. The initial tender for the purchases was issued in January of this year.
Considering the millions of school children, the numbers associated with the purchase (RD$18 million) were not really impressive: Just 15 pairs of handcuffs and 15 pepper spray cannisters to go along with a thousand flashlights and 7,800 police batons and a thousand whistles. However, it appears that the purchase might be on hold since not all of the members of the committee that supervises these things is in agreement.
