DR still has a chance at making the Olympics in basketball

Even when the Dominican Republic was not able to move to the semi-finals in the 16-team FIBA World Cup, the Dominican men’s basketball team still has one more chance to become one of the 12 teams playing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

As explained, the DR’s pass to the second round in the FIBA World Cup granted the country a spot in the Olympic playoff that will be held 2-7 July 2024. Only 24 teams will enter that tournament, that will be played in four groups of six teams. The winner of each group qualifies for Paris 2024.

Teams like Canada and the United States, which have already qualified for the Olympics, will not have to go to the playoffs, regardless of what happens in the rest of the current tournament, explains a report in El Dia.

In addition to the DR, other teams that have qualified for the 2024 Olympic playoffs are The Bahamas, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Brazil for the American continent. Asia will be represented by the Philippines, New Zealand, Lebanon and Bahrain. For Africa, Cameroon, Egypt, Angola and Ivory Coast will go, while for Europe, Poland, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Finland, Georgia and Spain have already qualified, with four teams still to qualify.

El Dia reports that the countries that have already qualified for the basketball tournament in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are: France (host), the United States and Canada (two best of America in the FIBA World Cup), South Sudan, Japan and Australia.
