President Luis Abinader said in the La Semanal press conference on Monday, 4 September 2023, that the escape of two inmates that were being transported from La Victoria jail to the San Pedro de Macoris jail, had the likely complicity of at least one of the jail escorts, according to evidence presented by the investigators.
He said that, according to ballistics evidence, the shots in the vehicle in which the prisoners were transported were fired when the vehicle was empty. “What does it tell us there, that those bullets were fired when there was no one there because otherwise everyone traveling in the vehicle would be dead,” said the President while showing the photographic sequence of the vehicle intercepted by unknown persons during the escape. He added that there is already a prison order against one of the police officers who is suspected of being involved.
The President is referring to sentenced now fugitive Jony Oscar Charles (Plumita), who together with Johnny Alexander Castro (Tutuma) and Enrique Valerio was on the way from La Victoria Jail in northern Santo Domingo to a court in San Pedro de Macoris on Tuesday, 29 August 2023. The minibus in which they were traveling was intercepted by a truck and a Ford Explorer, and two of the criminals, Jony Oscar Charles, Johnny Alexander Castro were taken. Plumita and Tutuma are criminals known for their drug-related operations. They were in jail for a four-person homicide.
