Disputes expert Nelson Espinal Baez described people trafficking at the Dominican border with Haiti as a “revolving door,” when interviewed by Pablo McKinney for Channel 9. He said that the Haitian trafficking mafia moves RD$4 billion a year that benefits civilians and members of the Armed Forces, Police and Migration that control the border. He estimates Haitians pay between RD$6,000 and RD$8,000 for the crossing, and that around 2,000 undocumented pay their way to make crossing every day.
Espinal Baez told program host Pablo McKinney that this is a situation that has to be addressed and the mafia confronted. “Those mafias, with those numbers, there is enough money for everyone,” said Espinal Báez, who considered that it is necessary to apply a policy to “suppress, punish and eliminate” human trafficking across the border. He favored that “whoever is caught trafficking illegals should be put in prison for 20 years,” because, in his opinion, it is a crime against the country.
Espinal Baez is a lawyer, professional mediator, and consultant on disputes resolution.
