Julio Rodriguez (J-Rod) of the Seattle Mariners became the first player in the history of baseball to hit 25 home runs and steal 30 bases in his first two years in the big leagues. Rodriguez, the Rookie of the Year in 2022, is on his way to major stardom.
Then there is very young Noelvi Marte, who hit his first home run and has been a sensation for the Cincinnati Reds. He also set a mark with 5 hits in his first 7 turns at bat.
And of course, there is Elly de la Cruz, also from the Reds. Elly de la Cruz hasn’t been batting much, but he did help win a game with his speed last week, and complete a very strange out: pitcher to second baseman to Elly de la Cruz to first for the out, scored in the books as 1-4-6-3. That is rare.
But there is also Jasson Dominguez, the young 20-year old who was called up to the Yankees and hit a home run on his first turn at bat against a 3-time Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros. It was somewhat a curiosity on another planet: Dominguez is known as the “Martian,” and Houston is known as “Space City.” Oh yes, Jasson has hit three more home runs for the Yankees.
