
The authorities reported that the woman who had kidnapped a newborn from the maternity ward at the President Estrella Ureña children’s hospital brought the baby to another clinic, enabling the return to the mother, Nangelis Martinez, after more than 24 hours of anguish.
“I was desperate. I got careless at one point, but I never thought this was going to happen,” Martínez said after holding the three-day-old baby girl again in her arms.
Meanwhile, Adriano López, the girl’s father, thanked the authorities for their efforts to recover the child and to find the responsible person.
The director of the Estrella Ureña hospital, Miguel Ortega said the health center’s security acted immediately after the mother reported the theft. He attributed the theft to carelessness on behalf of the mother.
As reported, the baby was found when the woman brought the baby to a Profamilia clinic for care. The staff there noticed the baby had on the tag of another hospital and reported the woman to the authorities.
The child would have been kidnapped at around 1:15pm on Monday, 25 September 2023, when the mother and father left the baby with a stranger to go to declare the birth.
