PRM deputy finally resigns after 28 months in a US prison

It took Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) deputy Miguel Gutierrez (PRM-Santiago) 28 months to resign after he was arrested in the United States for charges of ties to drug trafficking.

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco (PRM – National District) announced the resignation on Tuesday, 27 September 2023. Pacheco had repeatedly refused to take actions to remove Gutierrez arguing the latter had not yet been convicted. Gutierrez maintained his wages and benefits in the Dominican Republic.

Pacheco announced the lawyers of Gutierrez presented the resignation tht was put to a vote and approved unanimously by the Chamber of Deputies plenary session.

Miguel Gutiérrez faces charges of sending drugs to the United States, allegedly in boxes of fresh food aboard merchant ships or on yachts he owned.

In one of his appearances before the Florida judge, the former legislator pleaded not guilty to the crimes of which he is accused.
