Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has gone on record saying that Spain will be one of the participants in the multinational mission to help the Haitian police in Haiti. Haiti is under the control of gangs. Albares understands the task force will probably have to remain in Haiti for years to provide security and rescue the country from the gangs that control Haiti.
The Haitian government of Ariel Henry has requested the multinational force from the United Nations.
In a recent press conference at the 78th United Nations General Assembly, Albares spoke of the Spanish government’s support for Haiti. He said he is waiting for the UN Security Council meeting to determine the contribution of Spain to the contingent.
Likewise, Surinam’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin says that his government commits to contribute to the multilateral security mission that Kenya would lead to restore order and social stability to Haiti.
As in the case of Spain, Surinam’s foreign minister says his country has not decided whether to send police officers, soldiers or both. “We are still waiting for operational implementation,” he said.
Kenya has submitted a three-phase mission plan – operational support to the Haitian police to combat criminal gangs, ensure the security of key facilities and locations, and strengthen the police force in the long term.
Kenya has offered to deploy 1,000 police officers to Haiti to help restore normality in the country, racked by crime and violence and where social services that were already precarious have collapsed.
At least twelve countries, including The Bahamas, Antigua & Barbuda and Jamaica, have promised to join this international force. These countries are now waiting for the consent of the United Nations Security Council to mobilize the troops that will fight against the armed gangs.
Media reports indicate that Russia and China, two essential members of the UN Security Council with veto power, have yet to agree on the multinational intervention force.
